Communication Is Key

If we are to survive and thrive, we have to work together. All the signs are pointing us in that direction. Each one of us needs to take responsibility for our inner development and together, as a people, we need to take mutual responsibility for global development. This calls for a connection between all individuals and nations to gain greater unity.

Change starts at home. Let’s start by looking at our communication with the people we are close too. Are we honest? Are we compassionate? Are we authentic? Are we supportive?

Not always…. We should all develop our communication skills and cultivate supportive relationships.

Here are some guidelines for positive communication:

  • Observing as opposed to judging

Most of us find it hard to make observations without rushing to make judgments. We tend to immediately and, at times, unconsciously categorize or misshape what we are observing. We need to cultivate compassionate witnessing, without rushing to evaluate or judge.

  • Identifying our feelings and needs

When we know what we feel and what we need, because we have taken the time to be with our feelings and defined our needs, we can communicate them better.

  • Expressing ourselves clearly and honestly

This is always a challenge. What can help us is accepting our subjective reality and expressing our experience without blaming, pointing the finger, or attacking the other person. This is not always easy to do, but it is a very crucial skill for one to have.

  • Requesting as opposed to not asking or demanding

When we need something from another, a close friend, a colleague or an acquaintance, it is more effective to request what we need rather than not saying anything or demanding it.

  • Listening emphatically to others

Cultivating true listening skills is a cornerstone of communication. This involves taking the time to listen, listening from the heart and putting ourselves in another person’s shoes.

  • Mirroring

This is the skill of reflecting back to another person what we heard them express, showing them that we understood them.

  • Giving and receiving appreciation

We all need appreciation and acknowledgment. It is imperative to open ourselves up to receiving appreciation, as well as offering it to others.

These guidelines are not easy to master, but practicing them is well worth it. These skills enrich our lives, as well as the lives of others.
